In 2001 HIPP + BEST Architects PC completed improvements
to the open areas around several dormitories at the
University of North Carolina at Pembroke. The existing
court-yard was covered by hardened surfaces, including
brick pavers and concrete sidewalks. The University
wished to improve the courtyard appearance and reduce
the amount of impervious surface. To accomplish this,
the design incorporated a new network of footpaths,
new landscape plantings and a new central fountain feature.
The result was a design that is actively utilized as
not only pedestrian pathways but also gathering spots
for students and student related activities.
The sidewalk we configured to minimize foot traffic
over landscaped areas by aligning sidewalks along common
axis lines. Along these axis lines we incorporated “activity
nodes” or areas of expanded side walk that could
be used to stage small kiosks or tents for various functions.
The sidewalk surfaces were embossed, colored concrete
with detailing reminiscent of brick pavers. This solution
presented a more traditional texture and surface while
provided for maximum durability. Certain areas of sidewalk,
used by University equipment, were designed to handle
the heavy loads.
