In 1996,
while employed with Isley Architects in Durham NC, Rick
Best acted as Project Architect for a $2.2 million Pediatric
Catherization Facility addition to Duke University Medical
Center. Rick managed the project from Programming to
Construction Administration. He worked closely with
the doctors, facility staff, and equipment providers
to produce a successful design. This design called for
construction of a seventh floor to the existing six-story
building. The construction was completed while the existing
facility remained in operation.
The Pediatric Catherization
Facility addition has many similarities to the Replacement
Operating; not least of which is the delicate completion
of construction while the existing hospital remained
in operation. Also Rick worked closely with the equipment
suppliers to integrate the unique service and spatial
requirements of the new equipment. A Team Approach was
also utilized to gain input from the doctors, staff
and equipment suppliers during the design process. This
facility included a total of 11,000 sf of new construction
and renovations to several areas to provide the necessary
integration into the facility. The total project budget
was over $2.3 million.
