In 1996 we were asked to evaluate one of Wilmington’s
most impressive stone church structures, St. John’s
Episcopal Church. This 20,000 sf church was constructed
in the early 1950’s during two separate phases.
Over the following years little had been done to maintain
many of the building systems. A growing congregation
and developing church direction called the Vestry to
consider renovations and upgrades.
Our initial study looked at the existing
systems from electrical to interior finishes. A Evaluation
Report was prepared which included conditions of various
systems as well as potential solutions. Using this document
the Vestry polled the congregation to develop a list
of priorities and goals. Then the Vestry, with our assistance,
prepared a phased approach to address the concerns of
the congregation.
