INTERIOR/EXTERIOR RENOVATION, St. John’s Episcopal
Church, Wilmington, NC
In 1999 we were asked to evaluate one of Wilmington’s
most impressive stone church structures, St. John’s
Episcopal Church. This 20,000 sf church was constructed
in the early 1950’s during two separate phases.
Over the following years little had been done to maintain
many of the building systems. A growing congregation
and developing church direction called the Vestry to
consider renovations and upgrades.
Our initial study looked
at the existing systems from electrical to interior
finishes. An Evaluation Report was prepared which included
conditions of various systems as well as potential solutions.
Using this document the Vestry polled the congregation
to develop a list of priorities and goals. Then the
Vestry, with our assistance, prepared a phased approach
to address the concerns of the congregation.
The first renovation
phase included replacement of all existing mechanical
systems, upgrades of electrical and fire alarm systems
and major upgrades of existing interior finishes. This
effort included replacement of deteriorated windows
with similar, historically accurate units that improved
thermal efficiency and sound abatement. Various interior
design modifications were also undertaken to address
use issues and economy of functional space.
Future phases of design
and construction include exterior upgrades, landscaping
improvements, and a future Youth Activity Center that
will attempt to incorporate many of the historically
attractive elements of the original stone façade.
